On 19th of November, the entire Weka Team went to Auckland Zoo on the same day. There were so many of us that we had to hire two buses and even then we only just all fitted in with most people sitting three to a seat. We were nice and snug.
We went to the zoo to learn all about habitats. Our group learned about the different ways a giraffe is suited to its habitat: bodily features such as tall legs and neck, chewing food several times and spotty fur make it possible for the giraffe to live in harsh African conditions.
We also learned about the meerkats' habitat and its special features too; like shovel like claws for digging tough soles on his feet for walking over very hot sand, and dark fur around the eye socket to shade eyes from the sun, rather like sunglasses. Thank you, Amber Meerkat, for role playing these features for us.
We also learned about the giant tortoises from the Galapagos Islands. There was time to ask questions after we watched the spider monkeys being fed.
Mrs Bear also found another group of energetic, two legged creatures hidden from view under
the trees . . .
Before we left the zoo, we just had time to take a photo of each group and thank the parents for coming along to help us explore the zoo.
It had been a long day. Mrs Bear felt a bit like this on the way back to school on the bus!
