Highlights from our Distance Learning for Week 6, 24 - 28 August

Here is the end of the week report for week 6 and some of the highlights from our last week of distance learning at COVID level 3:

16 people did some Maths Whizz at home this week.

The top ten people this week in terms of time doing Maths Whizz were:

  1. Eillie
  2. Abbey
  3. Mia
  4. Lucas
  5. Emma
  6. Otis
  7. Dimitri
  8. Milan
  9. Sam
  10. Kadence
The top ten people this week in terms of making progress (completing learning tasks and doing a test) were:
  1. Kadin
  2. Charlotte
  3. Mia
  4. Otis
  5. Sam
  6. Eillie
  7. Dimitri
  8. Lucas
  9. Emma
  10. Kadence
It is interesting to see that the people who actually do a lot of Maths Whizz are nearly always the ones who make the most progress.  In Maths Whizz, as in most things, practice makes perfect.  (The more you practice, the better you become).

17 people read books on EPIC this week.
As a class, we were logged in and reading on EPIC for 1,149 hours in week 6 - that's amazing!

The top ten people who read books for the longest time were:

  1. Oliver
  2. Otis
  3. Wallace
  4. Mia
  5. Nathaniel
  6. Kadin
  7. Dimitri
  8. Milan
  9. Emma
  10. Constance
We have also being doing learning through SeeSaw.  Even most of the offline challenges, like making a rocket, go on SeeSaw so we can  share the photos of our work and record our feelings about the work we do.
We share these with Mrs Bear and also with our parents who can see and comment on our work as well.

The theme for week 6 was SPACE and nearly every learning activity was linked to SPACE: Maths, Reading, Writing, Science and Visual Art.

In Maths, we ordered the planets in the Solar System; we cracked the SPACE code using the SPACE code breaker to decipher the interstellar words and worked out the value of the SPACE symbols by adding and subtracting numbers.  Here is a selection of our SPACE Maths work:

In Maths, we also kept practising our multiplication facts as well by using all kinds of objects from around home:

In SPACE Science, we used milk, food colouring and detergent to make mysterious planets and moons with swirling clouds and moving craters!

We also watched videos from the International Space Station showing us what life is like in SPACE.  We made Tcharts to compare hair washing on Earth and in SPACE - it is quite different!

An astronaut even read us a book from SPACE . . . while floating upside down!

We even sang a SPACE song  - the lyrics were Science facts about the planets.   This gave us some ideas to design our own planet!

We learnt about SPACE by reading, singing and watching videos.  We wrote about the facts we researched in different ways.  We wrote information reports for the Daily Planet newspaper;  we researched SPACE facts to compete in the Solar System Fact Hunt; we made lists of things to pack for our SPACE trip and we also wrote about a planet of our choice using our senses.

r
That was a L-O-T of Maths, Reading and Writing . . . but we also had plenty to time to do SPACE Art too!

CBS News for Weeks 5 and 6

Here is the CBS News aptly called the 'Lockdown Lowdown".  Mrs Stansfield has included some of our towers from the Room 18 Tower Challenge in Week 5.  There are also photos of LOTS of cool places to read.  Maybe you could try one or two of them out this weekend!

Distance Learning for Friday, 28 August

Here are the SeeSaw tasks for Friday in more detail, in case your child needs some clarification or support.

This is an EXTRA FOR SPACE EXPERTS - you can learn about an astronaut but also have a go at making a digital rocket and take an astronaut selfie - what a way to finish SPACE week!

Distance Learning for Thursday, 27 August

Here are the learning activities on SeeSaw for Thursday in more detail, in case your child need your support or some clarification.

Solar System Fact Cards (or use books from home or EPIC)

This answer sheet will be uploaded to SeeSaw on Friday
