Making butter

The Elephants read and discussed two articles in School Journal 2000 Part 1 Number 1.  They were The First School Journal which compared school in the olden days to nowadays, and Dear Great Gran where Gran talked about some of the things she used to do in the olden days when she was a girl at school.

One of those things was making butter at home so, at the end of our reading contract, we made butter for ourselves in Room 18.  First we poured cream into glass jars and dropped a marble in the cream.  The marble would slide around and agitate the cream so that it would turn into butter more quickly.  We made sure that we screwed the cap on very tightly!  We held our thumbs on the lid as we shook the jar up and down, with the marble bouncing through the thickening cream inside.  We sat is a circle and took turns so that no one had a chance to get too tired and slow down the shaking.  After a few minutes, the cream turned into butter and buttermilk.  Some people tried the buttermilk; it tasted pretty much like ordinary milk, only a little watery.

Nearly ready . . . just a bit more shaking
